Service Definitions:
Kidney Function Evaluation
Kidney function is evaluated based upon laboratory, urinary, and radiologic studies. Once a baseline kidney function is established further monitoring and treatment plans can be individualized.
Acute Kidney Injury / ARF / Elevated Serum Creatinine
Acute or recent changes in kidney function are evaluated thoroughly and managed aggressively on an individualized basis to determine the etiology and promptly help to reverse if possible.
Chronic Kidney Disease Management
All stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD) are aggressively managed with a multidisciplinary approach. This is based upon confirmation of an underlying diagnosis. Then management consists of various treatment strategies to slow the progression of CKD. This is supplemented by continued screening studies, close monitoring and continuous patient education.
Anemia Management
The kidneys produce a hormone called erythropoietin, which stimulates red blood cell growth. Consequently as kidneys become weaker, less of this hormone is produced and anemia ensues (manifested by a drop in Hemoglobin / Hematocrit found in routine blood testing). We can treat with an erythropoiesis-stimulating agent to help manage getting the hemoglobin to goal. This is typically done after ruling out other causes of anemia and in addition to supplementations. As always, this is done in partnership with primary care / referring doctors.
Kidney Stone Evaluation/ Management / Prevention
Kidney Stone Evaluation / Kidney Stone Management / Kidney Stone Prevention. Working with our urology colleagues, typically after the diagnosis of kidney stones are made... a complete metabolic workup is done and an individualized plan for decreasing the risk of subsequent stone disease is formulated.
Hypertension Management
All types of blood pressure issues are commonly managed in an aggressive manner to goal readings with individualized attention.
Renovascular Disease/ Renal Artery Stenosis Management
Narrowing of the main arteries that supply blood to the kidneys may be benign in nature or can cause problems with regards to hypertension and renal function. We will help to deterime the best course of therapy and management.
Renal Cyst/ Polycystic Kidney Disease (PCKD) Management
Whether a hereditary from of Polycycstic Kidney diease or an acquired renal cystic problem, renal cysts can be benign or may potentially be more serious. We will help to systematically evaulate and manage all forms of cystic renal disease.
Urinalysis Evaluation
Urinalysis Evaluation and Simple urinalysis (UA) is done in office to check for blood, white blood cells, protein and urinary sediment. Other urinary tests are commonly done via outside laboratories and interpreted.
Kidney Biopsy
Kidney biopsies are done under direct radiographic visualization to minimize complications. This is reviewed and interpreted in conjunction with a Renal Pathologist to secure a precise renal diagnosis and help to tailor a treatment regimen.
End Stage Renal Disease Management
Typically when the kidneys are functioning less than 10-15% (Stage 5 CKD) kidney (renal) replacement therapy is sought.
This is in the form of either:
* Hemodialysis,
* Peritoneal Dialysis
* alternatively a kidney transplant.
We are here to explain all the options and help in preparation and then maintenance of each of the modalities.
Kidney Transplant Evaluation and Management
Kidney Transplant Evaluation and Kidney Transplant Management Initial screening for Kidney transplant can be done. At that time if appropriate, we would generate a referral to a local transplant center. After kidney transplantation, we will work with you and the transplant center to monitor the kidney function closely and provide education, guidance and support.
Fluid/ Edema Management
The kidneys help to manage the overall fluid status of the body. Diuretics are commonly used to help with excess fluid buildup. We help to workup and manage disorders of volume excess (“swelling”) in the body.
Electrolyte Disorder Management
Electrolyte Disorder Management. All disorders of minerals and electrolytes are evaluated and managed. We help to diagnose and treat disorders of sodium, potassium, calcium, phosphorous and magnesium balance.
Proteinuria Screening and Management
Excessive protein in the urine may be a manifestation of renal dysfunction and may ultimately lead to progressive worsening of kidney function. We will help to screen, evaluate and quantify the proteinuria. Then diagnose the etiology and help to implant an individualized treatment plan.
